According to sociologist Allan Horwitz, the “medicalization of deviance”
According to sociologist Allan Horwitz, the “medicalization of deviance” refers to:
… the tendency to define deviance as a manifestation of an underlying sickness, to find the causes of deviance within the individual rather than in the social structure, and to treat deviance through the intervention of medical personnel.
Numerous advances in science and medicine have helped to create this paradigm shift toward a medical model of understanding deviant behavior. Other social forces have contributed as well. The medicalization of deviant behavior reflects and redefines cultural norms; shifts responsibilities; reexamines the role of government intervention; has escalated pharmaceutical research and sales; has fostered increased reliance on health insurance; has expanded the role of the public education system; and has caused many to question the role of a prison system that has been defined comparatively and historically by extreme rates of imprisonment.
Constructing deviance as illness confers a moral status different from crime or sin. It impacts, in countless ways, “… ordinary people whose self-identity and life decisions may depend on the prevailing concepts of health and illness”.
Reflecting on readings, lectures notes, and the topics and themes we’ve addressed throughout the semester, write a 2 pages, double spacedessay that critically examines “the medicalization of deviance”. Please keep in mind that this is not a formal essay, but rather a collection of ideas.

ensure quality final submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules 2, 3, 5, and 6.
In this assignment you will demonstrate your mastery of the following course outcomes:

To complete this final project, you must first identify a theme, principle, or key issue from the field of management. To select your research topic, it may help to identify a chapter in the required textbook that interests you and then look for a key topic in that chapter to explore. You will then research that topic and a related theory, and reflect on how your knowledge on this topic might influence your
career in a voice-over PowerPoint presentation.
Your voice-over PowerPoint presentation should be 9-12 minutes in length and no more than 18 slides. The slides and presentation must
be engaging and capture the attention of the audience. It should not consist of slides with bulleted sentences where the presenter merely reads the slides. You must create a more engaging presentation where the slides act as talking points and the presenter’s words convey the points of the presentation rather than the words on the slides. Be creative and know your audience (a group learning about the
importance of this management topic in organizations). Write down the thoughts you would like to convey for each slide and practice
your script. The way you present this information can indicate your knowledge and confidence in the subject matter to your audience. You must reference a minimum of at least five sources, cited in APA style in your presentation.
If you would like to write a full paper rather than create a voice-over presentation, you may do that. The paper should be a minimum of 7 pages of which 5 will be content with one being a title page and the other a reference page. If you have more than one page of references,
your paper may be longer than 7 pages in length. You must reference a minimum of at least five sources, cited in APA style in your paper with APA style used throughout the paper.
Specifically, your final project presentation must include the following critical elements:
I. Introduction of a Theme, Principle, or Key Issue in the Field of Management
A. Briefly describe the research topic
B. Explain how the topic is integrated into the workplace and how this has supported growth and development in that area of the field. Reference at least three sources from scholarly or practitioner-related publications (e.g., Harvard Business
Review, Forbes) to illustrate your points.
C. Explain the topic’s importance and impact in creating a profitable company or great place to work
D. Describe any ethical issues that may be related to the topic
II. Exploration of a Relevant Theory in Practice
A. Summarize one management theory from the assigned course readings that addresses an issue related to your research topic

B. Choose one of the following options:
1. Illustrate what that theory looks like in practice by providing an example from a scholarly or practitioner-related
publication (e.g., Harvard Business Review, Forbes) that showcases a company successfully applying the theory to their management model. Be sure to address the following in regard to the example:
a) Describe how the company applied the theory
b) Evaluate what worked well
c) Assess what other companies could learn from this example
2. Identify an article from a practitioner-related publication (e.g., Harvard Business Review, Forbes) that discusses a company that was not successful in applying the theory to their management model. Be sure to address the following in regard to the example:
a) Describe how the company tried to apply the theory
b) Synthesize what the article says went wrong
c) Recommend what the company could have done differently to implement this theory successfully, or whether another theory would have been more appropriate in this situation (and if so, recommend a better alternative and support your argument).
III. Reflection on Career Impact
A. Reflect on how you bring what you have learned about this topic to your future workplace to make it a better or more productive company
B. Reflect on any personal experiences you have with this topic to support your position
Milestones
Milestone 1: Final Project Initial Thoughts
In Module 2, you will identify three areas of management you are interested in exploring. This milestone is graded with the Milestone
1 Rubric.
Milestone 2: Final Paper Topic Proposal
In Module 3, you will identify the topic you plan to research for your final project and expand your initial thoughts into a more developed paper proposal. This milestone is graded with the Milestone 2 Rubric.
Milestone 3: Final Project Progress Report
In Module 5, you will submit an update the status of your final project. You will assess what you have done, what you are currently
struggling with or questions you have, and what you have left to complete before submitting the final project. This milestone is graded
with the Milestone 3 Rubric.
Milestone 4: Summary Report
In Module 6, you will capture your final research project in a one-page paper that could be used to summarize your findings, providing a shortened version of your longer final presentation. This milestone is graded with the Milestone 4 Rubric.
Final Submission: Principles of Management Research Project
In Module 7, you will submit a voice-over PowerPoint presentation or full research paper that explains how a specific theme, principle, or key issue from the field of management developed, examines how it manifests in current workplace practices, and reflects on how you will approach issues related to this topic in your future career. It should be a complete, polished artifact containing all of the critical elements of the final product. It should reflect the incorporation of feedback gained throughout the course.

Milestones

In Module 5, you will submit an update the status of your final project. You will assess what you have done, what you are currently
struggling with or questions you have, and what you have left to complete before submitting the final project. This milestone is graded
with the Milestone 3 Rubric.
Milestone 4: Summary Report

Coke's Value Chain- What does Coke do that adds value to the Coca-Cola Company
Coke's Value Chain- What does Coke do that adds value to the Coca-Cola Company
The inbound logistics aspect of Coca-Cola is very strong as they have over 300 distribution or bottling centers across the globe serving to over 200 countries.
Having many distribution facilities will minimize shipping time to decrease shipping costs and therefore increase revenue.
A lot of research is put into the design and layout of the warehouse and other bottling centers. Since having intelligently laid out these warehouses, Coca-Cola has increased efficiency. Not only having inbound warehouses being effectively designed, Coca-Cola incorporates this layout technology in their outbound factories to increase their overall workflow design.
Coca-Cola is one of the most recognizable brands in the world and continues to market their product extremely well.
Coke's trademark value is estimated at a whopping $25 billion. The brand basically sells itself, but Coke is not just sitting back and being lazy. The Coca-Cola Company actively researches the needs of its customer segments and targets to provide drinks and snacks that people will want. As a luxury product, Coke understands that luxury items are the first things to go when times get tough. For this reason they provide excellent service to their suppliers and customers. Without excellent service, a beverage company will fall by the wayside as there are many other products out there to substitute any type of drink.
With over 500 brands owned by the Coca-Cola Company, there are many raw materials that are needed to support these snack and beverage brands. The main ingredient most of Coca-Cola's products is water. Coke understands the difficulties with many countries receiving fresh water and they work hard to deliver to these remote areas. Other than water, nutritive and non-nutritive sweeteners are used in their products. Coke has developed win-win relationships with their suppliers because both parties are in understanding that they will do a lot of business together. Coke does depend on one supplier for different ingredients they use. This could be dangerous for Coke as the supplier may take advantage of this relationship.
The Coca-Cola Company is massive and has its own internal administration. These internal divisions include Human Resources, Information Technology, Accounting and others. They also spend millions of dollars a year on research and development of new products. Continually changing and understanding the needs and wants of the world's population will lead to happier customers and increased revenues.
Required:
(a) Analyze this case and conduct a Value Chain Analysis (VCA) for Coca Cola Company. [20 MARKS]
(b) Managing the value system for a global business like Coca Cola requires an organisation to make two broad choices.
Discuss the two choices in light of the Coca Cola Company.
QUESTION TWO
The BCG (Growth-Share) Matrix is old but has stood the test of time. How significant and practicably usable is it today, in the light of vast developments in management tools that help assess market conditions. Use an organization of your choice for analysis. [20 MARKS]
QUESTION THREE
(a) There is a proposition in management studies that leadership affects performance and that there factors in leadership that are determinants of effective leadership. All those who aspire to leadership, senior and key positions must have a distinctive and powerful set of attitudes and values.
Discuss the values a leader should possess to achieve results, inspire others, and work effectively.
(b) Corporate governance is concerned primarily with protecting weak and widely dispersed shareholders against self-interested Directors and Managers,
Discuss the pillars of good corporate governance citing appropriate industry examples. [8 MARKS]
(c) Any strategy directions may be undertaken in a different way or by a different strategic method.
Explain the means by which a strategy can be pursued.

“THE SCENARIO, (by Julie Shields)”
“THE SCENARIO, (by Julie Shields)”
Read the following ‘scenario’ (authored) by Julie Shields . Read the code of ethics here:
http://www.nspe.org/resources/ethics/code-ethics and here:http://www.asce.org/code-of-ethics/.
Write a 2 page essay (12 pt Times New Roman, 1 inch margin, single space). First, summarize the engineering code of ethics from the webpages above (1 page) . Then, briefly summarize the ‘scenario’ below (1/4 page) . In your last 3/4 page, explore your ethical options, bring up specific ethical canons that are important here, discuss how you would handle the scenario, and what sort of consequences may result in your decision. You will get full credit for an essay that is sufficiently long and well written. You are expected to writing a meaningful discussion on the ethical obligations to show thoughtfulness. (I will check for plagiarism, it would be quite shameful to plagiarize an essay about ethics).
“THE SCENARIO, (by Julie Shields)”
I am an Environmental Engineer with a company called Global Improvements Inc. I have been assigned to travel to Santa Cruz, Guatemala, which has a population of 90,000, to provide the city with clean usable water. The company I work for focuses on using bioremediation practices to purify contaminated water all over the world. Therefore, for the last five years of working with this company, I have become very skilled and knowledgeable with using the technologies of biostimulation and bioaugmentation.
When I arrive at the sight of Santa Cruz’s main water supply on May 15, 2025 with five of my co-workers, we immediately begin assessing the costs and projections for making thewater clean and usable. After a month of thorough tests and studies, we find that the water is heavily contaminated with nitrobenzene, which is a common component of pesticides and herbicides. We also discover the water has extremely high concentrations of heavy metals. Because of the various types of microorganisms needed to remediate the water, specifically Pseudomonas, Bacillus, and Rhizopus, the stimulants required, such as peptone, glucose, and phosphorus, the severity of the contamination, and the location and size of the water supply, we project the cost of our project to be approximately $250,000. The above limitations cause the costs of equipment, scientific monitoring, construction, startup, and site-specific elements to raise the overall cost of the project. Unfortunately, my co-workers and I suspect the city of Santa Cruz would not be able to afford the cost of this venture because of its weak economic condition. However, after thoroughly discussing the issue of price, we believe the price can be brought down by $75,000 if the environmental conditions are extremely favorable. When environmental conditions are perfect, then the combined processes of biostimulation and bioaugmentation are more efficient resulting in a quicker water treatment. In this specific case, the faster the project is completed the less the project costs.
The night before the meeting with the mayor of Santa Cruz and the director of municipalities to discuss the terms of the project’s contract, my co-workers and I hold a webinar with the president of our company. Our president, Mr. Robert Robertson, distinctly emphasizes the importance of securing this job with the city of Santa Cruz. He reminds us that completing this project successfully would exponentially improve our company’s reputation in regards to cost-effective practices and humanitarian efforts. When we address to him the pressing issue of price, he has little to say except, “No matter what, make sure the contract gets signed.” After the webinar ends, my co-worker and the manager of this particular project, James Smith, assures me that Global Improvements Inc. will secure the deal after tomorrow morning’s meeting. He further explains that he plans to establish the budget at $175,000 as well as make a loophole in the contract that requires the city to pay $75,000 worth of extra expenditures over the budget if environmental conditions are not ideal. He believes this proposition will not only result in a deal with the Santa Cruz officials but also give Global Improvements Inc. financial breathing room if environmental elements are not favorable. I am quite unsettled by his idea and find many of his goals unethical. Is it morally wrong to take advantage of an already struggling city? Could potentially charging the city more than its citizens can afford negatively affect the public? Since I am not the manager of the project, do I have any control over the deceptive business practices my company and co-workers partake in?
That next morning during the meeting with the mayor and the director of municipalities of Santa Cruz, I hope that James will truthfully informthem about the estimated cost of our project. However, he releases false information about the price of the assignment in order to get the mayor and the director’s approval. With a cost of $175,000 and little understanding of the contract’s section that requires the city of Santa Cruz to pay up to $75,000 over the budget if needed, the city officials agree to the deal. The contract is soon sent off to be processed and will be officially completed in two weeks if there are no interruptions.
After the meeting I feel very disturbed by my co-worker’s deceptive actions. Although, it is possible that our company can bring the cost down to what he projected in the meeting, there is a very large chance it will be impossible. Is it unethical for engineers to distort or omit facts; however, where is it my place to determine if y manager’s actions are ethical or not? How will the city be affected if we go over budget and cost the citizens money they can’t afford to lose? What am I to do when my manager conducts dishonest business tactics?
Competitive Analysis Homework
Competitive Analysis Homework
Background: Understanding the competition is critical to the success of any organization. Many strategies and techniques are utilized for analyzing the competition, including SWOT Analysis, Porter’s Five Forces Analysis, and Competitor Strength Grids.
Assignment: Individual students or small groups (up to 3 students) are to perform a competitive analysis for a company or a product line of your choice.
Assume that you work for a specific company and have been asked to perform an analysis of your company’s competitive landscape for your upper management.
Any available resources may be utilized; however, all references should be provided. Be careful not to plagiarize.
Analyze and synthesize information, and then write in your own words.
Based on the findings of the competitive analysis research, each individual or group will:
• Write a competitive analysis report that summarizes the findings of the analysis and makes recommendations about the sales and marketing strategies for the company based on the findings. The report should be well-organized, clear, concise and without grammatical and spelling errors. It should contain all of the qualities of effective written communication that we have discussed throughout the semester. This report should be a minimum of four pages in length.
- or -
• Prepare a competitive analysis presentation that summarizes the findings of the analysis and makes recommendations about the sales and marketing strategies for the company based on the findings. The presentation should be polished and professional and should incorporate all of the qualities of an effective personal presentation that we have discussed throughout the semester. Include expanded explanations in the Notes area on each slide. This presentation should be between eight and ten minutes in length.
Submit your written report or PowerPoint presentation to the Dropbox by the due date. If more than one student worked on the assignment, be sure to include all student names on the first page AND in the Notes or Comments area in the D2L drop box submission. Make sure each person also puts the document in their own Dropbox.
Notes:
1. Choose a real company, not the company you made up for the Team Project. You need an actual company that exists so that you can conduct your research. Choose a company that you are interested in learning more about, or choose a company that you already know and like.
2. If your choice is a large company with multiple product lines, you may want to narrow the focus of your competitive analysis to one product line.
3. Select one model of your choosing to use to perform the analysis. You don't have to apply multiple models, even though there are many methods for performing this task. Just choose one that you like and that you think does a good job of describing the competitive landscape.
4. Decide on your output: a written report or a PowerPoint with notes under each slide.

The Pandemic And Socialism
The Pandemic And Socialism
If you google "socialism pandemic" you'll find that a lot of articles have been written in recent weeks on the question of whether the Covid-19 pandemic, and the government responses it has necessitated, are likely to prompt a political sea-change, making the sort of socialistic policies advocated by people like Bernie Sanders more popular.
Here are three articles, almost taken at random. The first is fairly neutral (and contains lots of links to other pieces); the second is written by a socialist; the third is skeptical about the need for socialism
"Will Covid-19 make us more socialist?" (Scientific American)
https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/cross-check/will-covid-19-make-us-more-socialist/ (Links to an external site.)
Prabhat Patnaik, "Socialism and the pandemic" (MR Online)
https://mronline.org/2020/04/11/pandemic-and-socialism/ (Links to an external site.)
Bill Sher, "No, coronavirus isn't proof that we need socialism" (Politico)
https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2020/03/24/coronavirus-socialism-sanders-144490 (Links to an external site.)
For a final assignment, I'd like you to write a short response (about 500 words–more if you have lots to say) to this question:
Does the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic show or suggest that capitalism has fundamental flaws that could best be fixed by moving toward some form of socialism?

LGBTQ+ films
You can find a list of suggested LGBTQ+ films with links to information about them that you may view for extra credit. These are simply suggestions and you may decide to choose a film outside of the list, provided it is NOT already one of the required films for the class.
After viewing one of these films, write a 500-word personal reflection (not a summary of the movie) addressing the following:
What specific LGBTQ-related issues does the film address?
What are the conflicts between characters regarding LGBTQ issues?
Connections to our texts are encouraged.
How has the film informed you or changed you?

Write an 800-1000 word analytical essay over the author’s rhetorical strategy
Write an 800-1000 word analytical essay over the author’s rhetorical strategy in a text of your choice
You may choose a text with both words and visuals. You may instead choose a text that is only words. You may not choose a text that is visuals without words, such as a photograph. The following list covers most of the choices for this assignment:
An essay, article, speech, or other persuasive text
A graphic novel or comic book
A short film, documentary, or scene in a longer film
A print ad or public service announcement or television commercial
An episode of a television show
There are other possible choices for this assignment, but if you move away from this list, get approval for your choice. I want to steer you toward the types of texts that provide the best opportunity for rhetorical analysis. For instance, some songs might be good choices, but most wouldn’t have sufficiently complex lyrics that you could analyze thoroughly in a paper of this length.
I also suggest avoiding ads that are frequently analyzed online. These include Budweiser, Nike, Apple and other popular products. Look for something that’s not analyzed to death online so you have an opportunity for your own ideas. In this assignment, topic selection is very important. Be clever and original in your choice.
Your Purpose, the Author’s Purpose, and What You’re Analyzing
Your purpose in this assignment is to demonstrate your skill in rhetorical analysis. You want to demonstrate not only that you understand the text you choose, but that you can make perceptive inferences about the author’s rhetorical choices in creating the text. You do this by identifying these choices and showing how they work—and work together—in the text. This is analysis.
Key Idea to Help You Succeed
An author creates a text for a purpose. He or she has something to say to an audience. This message is delivered through rhetoric. Everything from the choice of a title to the physical characteristics of the way the image looks on the page, to the casting choices of a commercial is a rhetorical choice the author makes. As a reader, you can look closely at the elements of the text and make good inferences about both why and how the text was produced. (See “The Tools of Rhetorical Analysis, Lesson 3.3”)

You are a Luxury Marketing consultant appointed by the Starriott board to advise on marketing of 99 N. Audley St (99 NAS)
BACKGROUND 99 North Audley Street – Elite Residences (99 NAS) was London’s first fractional ownership luxury property to offer an intelligent accommodation option for the super-rich who require a flexible, cost and time-effective alternative to second home ownership in central London. Membership offers convenient access to a selection of one- and two-bedroom serviced apartments in Mayfair at a fraction of the cost of whole ownership. •
Situated in the heart of Mayfair, close by the West End's many attractions • 59 impeccably appointed 1- and 2-bedroom apartments • Elegant interiors with a separate living and dining area, and well-equipped kitchen •
Dedicated concierge and valet, twice daily maid service • 24-hour room service, Pre-arrival provisioning of your apartment • Storage facility, for personal items, between visits • Member benefits including, local gymnasium and pool access, complimentary Wi-Fi, private business services. • 30 days occupancy per year (refund for unused days)
• Purchased for 30 years + annual maintenance fee. The owner, international hotel group Starriott, fundamentally believes in the concept of luxury fractional property ownership and is committed to making 99 NAS a success, after which they are planning to roll out the concept to cities including Paris, Frankfurt, New York, Tokyo and Beijing.
However, early in 2020, Starriott was finding the properties hard to sell. They wondered whether the concept was too complicated or whether they had simply misjudged the market…the CFO questioned whether the target audience would ever buy the concept of fractional ownership – preferring either to purchase an apartment outright or to stay at luxury hotels ad-hoc. The CMO pointed out that a recent research study with wealthy visitors to London indicated a lack of awareness of 99 NAS, but a strong positive reaction and interest once the concept was explained clearly to them.
YOUR TASK (IGNORE COVID-19) You are a Luxury Marketing consultant appointed by the Starriott board to advise on marketing of 99 N. Audley St (99 NAS). Starriott needs it to be a success as part of its global strategy. You should consider how to reach the target audience/s cost-effectively in order to both attract them and explain the benefits of luxury fractional ownership in the heart of Mayfair, London. You should consider all suitable channels, both offline and online, plus the vital role of the on-site sales consultants. Use any relevant marketing theory to support your analysis and recommendations.
