Extended Research Proposal

 Extended Research Proposal

The Dissertation route takes the form of an academic research proposal to investigate a specific business and management topic. Students can choose a topic of interest from the taught modules, their work experience or any other current topic linked to their course.

The proposal would be expected to present a coherent argument that makes the case for why a research topic is important, critically evaluates current related theory and related academic and contemporary debate to clarify the specific research questions, identifies a suitable methodological approach and details the strategy of investigation. The proposal should consider the strengths and limitations of the proposed research and ways in which the findings may be useful to management practitioners, academics and other stakeholders working in related fields. Completion of the research proposed is not a requirement of this Route: it is the proposal that will be assessed.

Dissertation

 Dissertation

The Dissertation route takes the form of academic style research focused to investigate business and economic problems. Students can choose a topic of interest from the taught modules, their work experience or any other current topic linked to their course. Dissertation route will suit to students who would like to work in their individual capacity (as opposed to consultancy project involving a client and other terms of reference). This route involves investigating a problem by reviewing the current literature to identify the gaps and proposing a set of testable hypothesis. This process involves formulating Null Hypothesis and Alternative Hypothesis and how these are linked to the study aim and objectives. Data gathering, sorting and presenting the basic summary statistics of the data set are important steps at that stage of the thesis. Students are also required to provide clear justification for the chosen quantitative or qualitative methods which are adopted to reach at the various inferences coming out of that data set. The results are then carefully evaluated to see if the findings are in line to the predictions of economic and management theories. In case the results are not in line to the prediction of economic and management theories, students are expected to analysis the reasons behind these results and compare it with the findings of other similar studies in that field. The final stage of the dissertation will discuss the implications of these results and how these results lead to practical recommendations for businesses and other stakeholders.

Business Consultancy Project

 Business Consultancy Project

The Business Consultancy Project is a piece of real world applied consultancy, undertaken for a client (this may be your employer, another organisation identified by you or one identified by the RGU Employment Hub) which offers you the chance to put into practice leadership and strategic thinking skills developed during the course of your studies.  All projects are strategic in nature and focus on a real, contemporary issue facing an organisation. This might involve research, developing a new process or carrying out market analysis or the identification of a new business case.  Capstone consultancy projects are designed to enhance career options for all students by developing and enhancing your research, analytical, communication, personal and –in particular – professional skills. The project thus provides a basic grounding in the process andmethods which underpin consultancy. Completing a project requires the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of information and observations. It is an orderly and practical exercise for which there are common criteria for evaluation. Students are therefore advised to proceed according to a practical plan in a systematic manner. A consultancy project is NOT a “big essay.”  It should be regarded as a proper piece of applied research, undertaken for a client.

Starting the project

A project may arise from a client organisation ‘advertising’ a project via RGU, out of an aspect of the student’s employment experience, or it may be directly related to an aspect of the student’s study. Students may also source projects from their own personal network.

Ensure that your supervisor and ‘client’ are kept informed of any major changes or problems. In addition, you should make a conscious, regular check that the research does not stray outside of the primary aim and that the agreed timetable is being adhered to.

Due to the diversity of topics, there is no specific or recommended structure of the Business Consultancy Report. Students should use their own judgement about the best structure of the report. It will depend on the topic and nature of the consultancy project.
