Overview: Students will select appropriate research literature to review and discuss in this section. The purpose is to explore issues surrounding the thesis statement. You should understand that the strategy for this literature review section does NOT require you to locate specific information about your company and its problems—you presented that type of information in chapters 1 and 2. Instead, use this section to discuss various articles that describe research on other businesses with similar problems (as outlined in your thesis statement).
Details: Based on the preparation in Chapters 1 and 2, students will have a clearer understanding of the type of literature and data to review for this chapter. To facilitate this, students will refer to the topics described in Chapter 2 to identify one or two problems, issues, weaknesses, or threats on which to focus the research. For example, if your thesis (plus research question and hypothesis) suggests your company is unprofitable due to a lack of strategic leadership, you might discuss articles presenting research on companies that have failed when their corporate leaders lack strategic vision. If, on the other hand, your thesis asserts that your company is failing to attract a growing customer base, you might look for articles analyzing successful or unsuccessful marketing strategies in similar industries. Again, your focus here is to explore issues in other companies that you can apply to the situation in your company. As a suggestion, start to formulate recommendations for solving the problems in your company. You will keep these tentative recommendations in mind while conducting a formal SWOT analysis in Chapter 4. After refining your recommendations, you will formally present them in Chapter 5.
Sections & Subheadings
The sections in this chapter will include a subheading for Research Methods describing the process you intend to use for locating business literature (electronic databases, hard copy journals from the library, appropriate internet sites, etc.). Also, describe the methods for corporate data collection and analysis plus any specific record research conducted at the organization or available through historical or public financial records, etc. Then, as you conduct the literature review, provide subheadings for the types of business problems you are researching in each section. For example, one subheading might be Research on Strategic Vision Failures and another might be Research on Failed Marketing Strategies (or, Research on Successful Marketing Strategies).

As you report on the information in the literature, avoid large sections of copied and pasted material–even if you are using proper quotation marks. It is better to summarize the researcher’s conclusions in your own words and then provide a proper in-text citation. This will also help you remain within the TURNITIN Similarity Index percentage targets. Note that smaller direct quotations (one sentence or phrase) are acceptable for emphasis but use quotation marks and citations properly. However, you can refer to this layout to observe how professional researchers format entries in a formal APA-style list. Chapter 20 of the Howard & Taggart text will help with formatting the reference list. A typical length for 10 or more references is two pages, properly formatted.
Summary
In summary, students will describe one or more primary issues (problems) in the organization (defined in the thesis statement) and relate them to a selection of references found in contemporary business research literature. In addition to identifying pertinent literature, students will describe the methods for corporate data collection and analysis. Students are encouraged to synthesize and extend material learned, collected, and prepared during the BAS program.
Learning outcomes to demonstrate here are LO-3 (Comprehend and apply the framework underlying the principles of finance, budgeting and accounting) and LO-6 (Apply information management practices to the business/organization environment and adapt to future technology changes). It is also important to demonstrate LO-8-B2 in this section (Apply skills acquired in management, international business, marketing, business law, accounting, finance, economics, and management information systems to different business environments).
Length: Chapter 3 is 4 or 5 pages (1200 to 1500 words). You may exceed these targets if required
