Topics
1. Write a descriptive essay on Journal Entry 1 or Journal Entry 4 from the Study Guide. Your essay should be more polished and precise than your journal entries are likely to be.
Journal Entry 1: Read the Apology (Plato, The Trial and Death of Socrates third edition) in its entirety.
Question that were answered in journal entry 1 –
a. briefly state what you think the text is about. What is the central theme?
b. What are the critical stages in the text, as you see it, that lead Socrates to his conlusion? Are there crucial statements made or events that happen? Can you identify them?
c. Identify specifically of what Socrates is accused. there are a couple of sets of these accusations (the other at 24b). Socrates does an analysis of these accusations, so it is important, initially, to understand what they are. By analysing these accusations, Socrates is able to "turn the tables" on his accusers. Watch for it!
Journal Entry 4: As you did for the Apology, read the Phaedo in its entirety to gain a feeling for what the text is about.
The following questions were answered in journal 4
a. as you did with the apology, briefly state what you think section 57-80e of the Phaedo is about. What is the central theme?
b. What are the critical stages in the book, as you see it, that lead Socrates to his conclusion? Are there crucial statements made or events that happen? Identify them.
2. Pick one of the key supporting arguments in either the Apology (Plato, The Trial and Death of Socrates third edition) or the Phaedo (up to 81a) and describe it. Explain what the argument has to do with the overall theme of the book. In the case of the Phaedo, explain how the supporting argument relates to the theme in this half of the book.
3. Describe the main differences between the soul and the body, according to Socrates. That is, identify their important differences in properties and explain why these differences makes them so fundamentally different.
