General instructions
Read through the following case study and then complete all the tasks.
Scenario:
Singleton Council has recently engaged an HR consulting firm to study its workforce and to write a new workforce plan and people strategy. Refer to the “Our People Strategy 2017 – 2021” (found under additional resources on Canvas). As a member of the Singleton Council HR department, you have been heavily involved in the study and the preparation of the strategy.
Your manager, Emilie, has asked that you now take the lead in putting the strategy into action and to undertake the following:
Research workforce requirements
Develop workforce objectives and strategies
Implement initiatives to support workforce planning objectives
Monitor and evaluate workforce trends
The report is to be presented to Council at the next council meeting in 3 weeks. Emilie has given you 3 weeks to get these tasks done in preparation for the council meeting.
Part A – Research Workforce Requirements
You can undertake some initial research via the internet, by referring to your learner guide and class presentations and the “Pulse – Retention and Turnover” study and the “Our People Strategy 2017 – 2021” document. (approx. 100 words)
1. Undertake some independent research on employee turnover and list 5 facts and or statistics that you find interesting or surprising. Include the source of each fact statistic. You can also refer to the “Pulse – Retention and Turnover” document.
2. Read through the “Our People” document from Singleton Council and answer the following questions:
What is the staff voluntary turnover rate?
How long do staff stay in the job on average?
What % of employees resign within the first year
What is the % of employees from the different generations (Y, Z and baby boomers) leave their job at council?
3. List and describe 5 factors that affect workforce supply. (100 words)
4. List and describe the 4 main categories of labour needs? (100 words)
5. List 5 forms of difference that relate to a diverse workforce.
