An Allegory, Social Commentary As Seen In Film
For the second essay of our course, we will be producing a work that seeks to identify and analyze either an allegory or social commentary, depending on the film you choose. Your choices for this assignment are Life of Pi and War for the Planet of the Apes (both films will be viewed in class). We have taken some time discussing various allegorical works and themes as well as social commentaries and critiques in both literature and on screen, now we will be applying these techniques to one of these films.
After each film viewing, we will be having a short class discussion on it in order to better understand the many symbols and possible references that were present. With both films, I am looking for you to identily and dissect specific themes; in Life of Pi, you will be aiming at producing an essay that unfolds the theme of religion, in War for the Planet of the Apes, you will also be unfolding religion but can also choose race and race relations (your choice in that film). The theme of religion in both films does not have to pertain to Judeo-Christian
(Western World) values alone, it can, of course, reflect various religions such as Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, or any other you deem mirrored in the film. In regards to race in the War for the Planet of the Apes film, produce a paper that identifies characters, or groups, as oppressed and oppressor and how.
Could the film possibly be mirroring historical events?
This paper should be a minimum of six (6) full pages in length, demonstrate attention to analysis and dissection of content, provide the reader will solid context as needed, and convey originality.
